# Patagonia

Glaciers, fjords, and the roads that run out

Patagonia is where the Andes drown. A thousand miles of channels, fjords and glacier-fed inlets run south from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn, threading between temperate rainforest and tidewater ice with almost no roads and almost nobody. A yacht is not a luxury here, it is the only practical way through. Expect whales, dolphins and sea lions in the channels, condors over the peaks, williwaw squalls off the glaciers, and anchorages you will have entirely to yourself.

Best time to go

December to March for the fjords, with the longest days and most settled weather. November and April are quieter but windier.

Charter season

November to March. Expect strong katabatic winds year-round and yachts equipped for self-sufficient cruising.

Getting there

Punta Arenas (Chile) and Ushuaia (Argentina) are the main departure points, both accessible from Santiago and Buenos Aires. Puerto Montt serves the northern channels.
